Sustainability and Competitiveness converging

One of the most important shifts in packaging is that sustainability and competitiveness are increasingly becoming connected rather than conflicting priorities.

Over the past several years we have noticed a significant shift in how companies approach sustainable packaging. What was once primarily driven by environmental responsibility and brand positioning is increasingly becoming a question of competitiveness, resilience, and long-term economics

This transformation is particularly visible in industries such as cosmetics and alcoholic beverages, where packaging plays a central role in both product protection and brand identity. These sectors have historically depended on complex plastic structures, decorative multi-material packaging, and resource-intensive formats to deliver premium experiences. Today, however, the underlying economics are beginning to change. Rising costs for fossil-based materials, increased regulatory pressure, and rapid advances in fiber-based material technology are creating a new landscape for packaging innovation. Sustainable alternatives are no longer only environmentally attractive, in many applications they are also becoming commercially and operationally competitive. In my view, this marks an important turning point for the industry.
